Chocolate Brandy Flip

  • 2oz Brandy
  • 1Egg White
  • 1/2 oz Heavy Cream
  • 3/4 oz Creme de Cacao (Dark)
  • 1/4 oz Simple Syrup
  • Garnish with Nutmeg

Flip cocktails, originally from England, were served hot in a mug.  Traditionally they were filled with ale; nutmeg; egg; sugar; ginger and rum or brandy and made in a hot tin pot over a fire. The fusion of warm spices with warming liquor would have been a salve during those cold winter nights that the earlier American settlers had to endure.

With our frontier days mostly over and outdoor cooking over a fire days sadly limited, it's not surprising that Flip preparation began to be served as a cold libation with the warmth still being provided by aromatic spices.  The Chocolate Brandy Flip is a variation of the traditional Brandy Flip and is a great alternative to the holiday Eggnog that one may have grown tiresome of.
